An unforgettable weekend of set dancing at the shore!
GWCC's Cape May Dance Weekend is a premier Irish set dance event, and has been enjoyed at the shore for decades -- in fact, 2017 is our 30th anniversary! The name comes from the original location, Cape May, New Jersey, where we learned sets from the legendary Connie Ryan. Needed repairs at the Cape May Convention Hall necessitated a move; so after 20 years in Cape May we moved across the Delaware River to nearby Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This weekend event continues to thrive there today, welcoming dancers and traditional music enthusiasts from all across the United States, as well as from Canada and Ireland.
GWCC continues to offer this great weekend-long event for the same low price as previous years -- the complete Events Package is $195/person ($185 for GWCC members). Our Registration & Accommodations page has details on what is included in the Events Package.
The Workshops: This year we will again be learning from Irish set dance masters Pádraig & Róisín McEneany. 2017 is a milestone for the McEneanys as well: their 20th year as our instructors, and we're proud to have them back. They will lead two Saturday workshops (morning and early afternoon) and one more on Sunday morning. These popular instructors have a warm and engaging teaching style that appeals to beginners and experienced dancers alike.
Possible Workshop Dances: Workshop dances are chosen close to the event weekend, but be assured we'll be happily busy! Those who register for the Events Package will receive details on the workshop dances by email before the weekend; and, as always, dance notes for all dances taught in the workshops will be available on our Dance Notes page of the website after the weekend.
The Ceilis: What good would dance instruction be without the chance to enjoy it? We start things off with a bang -- an opening ceili on Friday night with a program filled with popular set dances. Then the Saturday night ceili means more dances, including an opportunity to put what we learned during the day into practice. Workshop dances done at the ceili will be called. The ceili programs might also include a dance or two we learned last year -- refresher notes are on our Dance Notes page. Dance lists for both ceilis will be included in the Events Package, and will be chosen from this list:
Antrim Square Set Connemara Reel Set
Ballyvourney Jig Set High Cauled Cap
Caledonian Set Kilfenora Plain Set
* Carrowbeg Set * Merchant Set
Clare Lancers Set Newport Set
Clare Mazurka Set North Kerry Set
Clare Plain Set waltz
* Connemara Jig Set *
*These two dances are from our 2016 workshops; see the Dance Notes Page for refresher notes.
The Music: Understanding that exceptional live music is essential to any set dancing event, we invite talented and renowned traditional musicians to play for us. Fortunately, the mid-Atlantic region is blessed with many, many talented musicians! The 2017 ceilis will again feature the lively tunes of Brendan Dolan, Bernadette Fee, Michael Fee, Linda Hickman, and John Nolan.
Back by popular demand, there will be a Social Hour & Session with the Band after the Saturday afternoon workshop. Bring your instrument! If you don't play an instrument, no worries, enjoy the tunes! Admission and a drink are included with the Events Package, there will also be a cash bar. We're looking forward to the chance for all to cool down, have some refreshments and mingle.
